Lucan CC to exhibit at the BT Young Scientist Exhibition
Congratualtions to Alba Cooney Mercadal Class Clarke TY whose project entitled ‘The Colour Of Sound & it’s Effect on the Brain’ has been accepted to exhibit at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition at the RDS in January 2023. All 1st year students will be supporting Alba on Thursday 12th January 2023 as the Science department have arranged for this year group to visit the exhibition. All details have been given to 1st year students & their tutors. Well done Alba
Trailblazers lighting up the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition
Congratulations to our amazing Lucan Community College students who have been chosen as entrants in this year’s BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition. Five of our students have been selected to take part in this year’s BT Young Scientist Competition.
This year we have Gabriele Kolesnikovaite and Daniel Kolesnikovas, a sister and brother team, selected for their project entitled “An Investigation of How The Bi-Annual Clock Change Effects The Irish Population”, a very topical project. Transition Year team Cora O’Toole, Faye Murphy and Tara Phelan are working on “Women In Sport: a Study To Investigate and Examine The Most Effective Ways of Keeping Girls Playing Sport Throughout Their Teenage Years” and have already gathered over a thousand response to their online survey for their own topical investigation.

A huge congratulations to these students, and also to their teachers Ms. Healy and Ms. Walsh, for being selected for the Young Scientist Exhibition. Best of luck this week in the RDS. Students call on Minister for Education to prioritise Lucan CC’s school extension
Gabriele Kolesnikovaite is pictured presenting letters from students, parents and staff to Minister McHugh on 14th November 2018 asking that the school extension process for Lucan Community College is prioritised. The Minister thanked students for raising this important issue.
Gabriele was part of a group of LCC students who attended a media launch for BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition. To infinity and beyond in Lucan CC
Last week saw us celebrate “Space Week” (4th-10th October) with the students and teachers of Lucan Community College embracing this event.
The event saw us discovering how the plants orbit our solar system, the constellations of the stars, where is the Big Dipper, can we find “Orion’s Belt”?
We also looked at how lasers worked. Did you know the word Laser is actually a scientific acronym L.A.S.E.R for Light Ampilification of Simulatated Emmission of Radiation.
Our Science teachers travelled to Birr, County Offaly over the weekend to visit the original Birr Telescope, which at one time was the largest telescope in the world. Birr Observatory now hosts one of the largest Radio Telescopes in the world.
The teachers also hosted a “Space Week Table Quiz” for our space mad students.

Science week in Lucan CC
National Science Week took place from 12th to 19th November 2017. Science students engaged in a variety of science focused activities ranging from daily puzzles to quizzes.
Those who designed science posters faced tough competition with a very high standard of posters entered by students. The winners of the first year poster competition were Anna Capcarrere and Stephen Lamb. Joint winners of the second year poster competition were Amy Martin and Yasmin Aminou with their very creative science posters.
The daily puzzles challenged students with some students entering more than one answer to increase their chance of winning a prize.
The winners of the daily science puzzles were as follows:
Monday: Marius Furtig-Rytterager (2nd year)
Tuesday: Megan Flanagan (1st year)
Wednesday: Anna Wanic (1st year)
Thursday: Charlie O’Malley (3rd year)
Friday: Nathan White (2nd year)
Thanks to the Science Department for organising all activities and well done to all students who engaged with Science Week.
Two Lucan CC students announced as finalists in national Science Olympiad
Congratulations to two Lucan Community College students who have been announced as finalists in the IrEUSO national competition based on their outstanding Maths and Science Junior Certificate results. The college congratulates and wishes best of luck to Alex Hanley (Transition Year) and Oisín O’Sullivan (5th Year) as they prepare for this unique and prestigious competition.
The national finals of the International Science Olympiad are being held in DCU on 11th November. If successful in DCU, the Lucan Community College students could make the Irish team for the 2018 International Science Olympiad.
Next year’s EUSO International Science Olympiad will be held between the 28th of April and the 5th of May in Ljubljana, Slovenia. We wish every success to both Alex and Oisín as they attempt to make the grade for Slovenia.
Lucan CC News Updates from 9th November
Senior hurling: Congrats to our senior hurlers who beat St. Paul’s, Raheny in their championship final which was played at Parnell’s GAA club. We started well and took early control. Two brilliant goals from Evan Lombard and a point from Charlie Keher put us in front early. However we had to work hard to hold a 3 point half time lead. Our captain Rory Stapleton put over 5 points from frees and set up Alan Murphy for another. Charlie Keher’s over head shot put us 5 points clear before St. Paul’s got a late goal to leave the final score at 3-7 to 2-8. Arts Week: Another wonderful Arts Week took place just before the mid-term. After a week of workshops for all 1st, 2nd ,3rd and 5th year students, we rounded up with a dress-up day on Friday. This year’s theme was green, white and orange, which allowed us to create a human Irish flag. On the final day we also had an all-school table quiz. Earlier in the week we had two student variety shows and daily lunch time music. All in all, thanks to Mr.Duffy, the co-operation of our students and the hard work of teachers we had an excellent Arts week this year. Special thanks to Jimmy Stagg who provided bicycles for us to use as part of our fundraising Spinrowathon.
Science: Well done to TY student Oisin O’Sullivan who participated in the recent Science Olympiad which took place in DCU. Oisin was invited to take part because of his outstanding science result in this year’s Junior Certificate exams.
Gaisce Awards: Congrats to six of our leaving cert students who recently received their Silver Gaisce Awards. The recipients were Emma Donnelly, Aisling Fahey, Eoin Hayes, Hannah Hughes, Eva Minihane, and Emma Tuohy. They awards were presented to them by All-Ireland winning footballer Jonny Cooper at a ceremony in the Helix.
Cross Country: An excellent turnout with 4 girls and 9 boys from 1st year who took part in the race. Millie Reid ran a brilliant race to finish in third place being narrowly pipped by two girls from Cabra, with strong finishes from Ellen Moloney and Nicole Ryan. Well done to Liz Uyi on completing her first cross country. All the boys ran very well, with four runners in the frame in a fast finish. Matthew Butler the best in 7th place, despite sustaining an injury. Mohammad Sulaiman, Brian Flanagan, Conor Croke, Joel Ogunkoyejo, Conor Duffy, Hugh Cuffe, Callum Brookes and Umer Muhammad all ran their best too.
Solar Eclipse – Update from Science Department
As you may be aware Ireland will be experiencing a partial solar eclipse on the morning of Friday March 20th. It will begin at 8.30am and end at 10.30am with totality occurring at 9.30am. In Ireland a maximum of 92% of the sun will be covered. We will not experience a similar event in Ireland until 2026 and not in Dublin until 2600!!
Please note that looking at the sun is dangerous and can result in serious and permanent damage to the eyes. The only way to look at the sun is indirectly or through a special filter. Lucan Community College are through to the U16 football final after a resounding 3-18 to 0-12 points win against Scoil Chaitriona from Mobhi Road. Lucan CC will play Colaiste Eanna from Rathfarnham. Congrats to the squad and their management Mr Callaghan and Mr McGowan. @LccAssoc
