Transition Year School Clean Up Initiative
66 Transition Year volunteers donned their cleaning gear and picked up their brushes, mops and leaf blowers this week to really give the school a much needed lift. The students spent a whole day cleaning every nook and cranny of the college building.
The initiative was conceived by Mr Duffy, who is also heavily involved in our Green Schools programme in the college. As we wait for the addition of our new extension, and a much needed refresh of our current building, staff and students both felt the existing building could do with some extra TLC to match the care that occurs in every classroom. Mr Duffy and his team of volunteers answered the cleaning call.
The need for this extra care is front of our minds as a school community as we approach our 30th anniversary. We want to sincerely thank all of the student volunteers and teachers involved with this wonderful ‘giving back’ initiative.
As a community we are so proud that so many of our transition year students wanted to improve the place where all members of our school community come to learn.
Public Meeting about Lucan CC Extension Plans
Public information Meeting re Lucan Community College’s extension and refurbishment plans will be held at 4.30pm on Thursday 22nd June in the college. This meeting will outline the Planning Permission Application, display plans for the building and personnel from the Building Team of DDLETB will be available to answer queries. Please confirm your interest in attending by booking a free ticket through Eventbrite so that we can have an idea of numbers.

Lucan CC Extension gets the go ahead
We have just been advised that the Department of Education and Skills review of Stage 2A is now complete. Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Education and Training Board will shortly receive written notification that we can now proceed to Stage 2B. The design team will then begin the Stage 2B work which has as its stated objectives to:

As a community we are absolutely delighted with the news that our much needed extension has moved ahead to the next stage of planning. This represents a huge step forward for Lucan Community College, our students, teachers and parents in getting a school building to match the quality of our teaching and learning. We want to acknowledge the huge effort made by our pupils with their petition and also our Board members, parents and teachers with their individual letters to the Minister for Education and local representatives in getting the extension back on track. We also acknowledge the ongoing work of the DDLETB building team who are managing this process. We sincerely hope it now moves ahead at speed without any further delays.
We need your support now – Delay in Lucan CC extension and refurbishment
As all members of our school community will be aware we have been awaiting the provision of a school extension and refurbishment for over ten years. We now need your support to move the school extension process forward. It appears that it is now delayed in the DES building unit awaiting approval to proceed to Stage 2B. So how can you help? Please print, address, sign and forward copies of the letters below through any means possible (mail, email, social media) and encourage other people to send them to as many people as possible on the contact list below and to anyone else who may be able to offer representation on our behalf. This is a really crucial time in the school extension process and everyone’s support is much needed at this time.

Plans for our Extension
Our new building will include:
- New student entrances
- Full sized PE hall capable of facilitating two class groups at once with fitness suite above
- Two new Art rooms with built in kiln for pottery
- New Science rooms
- Dedicated Library
- New computer rooms
- Dedicated Special Needs Unit (most probably for students on Autistic Spectrum)
- Refurbished and new T4 rooms including: technology, technical graphics/DCG, metalwork/engineering and woodwork/construction studies
- Improved use of courtyard space
- Larger canteen facilities
News Update 25 November 2015
A lot has been happening in the college since the midterm break. Read on to get an update on curricular and co-curricular activities.
Extension: Great news regarding progress of our extension with Lucan Community College appearing on the capital building programme for 2016. A meeting of key personnel was held in Lucan CC last week and an opening date for the extension and refurbishment of September 2018 is still on the cards. This is a vital time for the extension process and we encourage all interested parties to keep the pressure on to ensure that things move forward in a timely manner. Thanks to parents, Board members and local and public representatives who are working to support the college on this matter.
School Bank: After a very successful opening event with guest speaker Henry Shefflin, the bank continues to attract a large number of customers with prizes and rewards for regular savers.
Basketball: Well done to the girls U19 basketball team who beat Tallaght CS and Ballinteer CS recently with very convincing wins.
Amnesty Team: Our school amnesty group for senior students is busy organising awareness raising events for International Human Rights Day on 10th December. From art and poetry competitions to the Write for Rights campaign, the group are planning many interesting and informative events for our school community.
TY Enterprise: Well done to students Darragh, Erin and Sophie who sold Christmas Decorations in one of our local banks last week as part of their enterprise project. Deck the halls!
Student Council: The student council meet regularly and are currently discussing issues such as broadband speed, canteen and healthy eating, covered bicycle racks and other issues to improve the student experience in the college. New members are always welcome.
Jigsaw Team: A group of senior students are currently working with other students from Colaiste Brid and Moyle Park College to set up a peer mentoring programme in these schools. This team will raise awareness in the schools of the importance of positive mental health and are being trained by Jigsaw facilitators.
TRX Bootcamp: We are continuing to offer TRX bootcamp training to female students on Wednesdays from 2-3pm. Please see your PE teacher if you are interested in this opportunity to get fitter with instructor and past-pupil Mark Lacey.
Reading Week: A very successful reading week saw students (and teachers) dropping everything and reading for one class every day during week of 9th November. A print-rich environment in the home has been shown by research to improve student engagement in the education system so we encourage all parents/guardians to encourage children to read from an early age. The value of the bed-time story is priceless!
Camogie: Congratulations to the Junior Camogie team who enjoyed a resounding victory over Mount Sackville recently. Player of the match was Rhiannon Withero with Caithlin Maguire scoring a crucial goal. Well done girls!
Team Hope: 1st years and TY students gathered shoe boxes stuffed with useful items for the Team Hope appeal.
Parent Teacher Meetings: An excellent attendance of parents ensured that our 5th year parent teacher meeting was a great success. Our 6th year meeting took place on Thursday 26th Nov with our 3rd year meeting planned for Mon 7th December. Meetings run from 4.15-6.45pm.
Rugby: Our senior rugby boy’s team reached the quarter final of the Leinster competition before bowing out gracefully with an excellent team performance. Best on the day were Leon Duff, Daniel Forde, Eric Greene, John McMurray and Cian Thuillier with man of the match going to Shane Dardis.
Enrolment 2017: The Board of Management are delighted with the number of applicants for 2017 and will be writing to applicants shortly to confirm category placements and offers of places.
Update on Lucan CC Extension Process
Dublin and Dun Laoghaire confirmed this morning that they are in receipt of correspondence from the Department of Education and Skills which allows the extension project to move on. The Department has approved the proposed changes of rooms and functions as proposed by the design team following a review of the current schedule of accommodation and the schedule of future use. In issuing this approval and seeking some additional information from the design team, the Department is happy for the project to now progress to the completion of stage 2A. The DoES information will be reviewed and decisions made by the ETB team as to how to progress the project to the next stage and work on this is commencing immediately.
Thanks to all of those who have been raising awareness of the delays with the process. Please continue to raise awareness of the need for an extension and refurbishment works in the College through all appropriate channels. Our Transition Year students are taking to social media as part of an awareness raising project about the school extension.
The new building and extension will include a full sized Gym and Fitness Suite, a Library, new specialist Art, Science, Home Economics, Technology, Design and Communications Graphics and Computer rooms and additional general classrooms, locker areas and storage areas. An improved student entrance area and refurbished office with a dedicated parent meeting room are also on the plans. It will also involve a traffic management solution including a drop-off area within the school grounds which should help to resolve some of the ongoing traffic issues at the school gates.
Our students deserve a building that matches the quality of education they receive and that meets the needs of a modern second level student in a rapidly changing world.
Appeal for Action on School Extension – Parents Association say “Enough is enough”
Lucan Community College Parents Association have issued this appeal to all current, past and future parents in the catchment area: “Please lobby your politicians and public representatives in relation to further delays that have been experienced in progressing the planned school extension”. A draft letter is provided below along with some email addresses that may be suitable recipients for your communication. The Parents Association is liaising with the Board of Management of the College to try to ensure that the extension will be ready for September 2018 in line with the increased student intake agreed for 2016. Students in Lucan Community College deserve a school building that matches the excellent teaching and learning provision in the school. The PA AGM is on Tuesday 6th October and the main agenda item is the delay on the extension process.
Draft Letter:
To whom it may concern,
An extension to Lucan Community College is provided for in the current Five Year Construction Programme. However, the Building Programme is stalled at the moment.
It was the hope of the Board of Management of Lucan Community College that the project would have been progressed by now to stage 2B so that a planning application could have been submitted before the end of 2015.
To date, the project has not even reached the approval of the revised schedule of accommodation despite the submission of all relevant documentation by the design team last May. As a result, a planning application will not likely be submitted this year and the overall delays to the project may now mean that the target opening date of September 2018 may not be met.
I don’t understand why the Department of Education & Skills has not authorised the project to progress to Stage 2A given that this project is included in the current Five Year Construction Programme.
I am requesting that you:-
- Seek to immediately authorise the project to progress to Stage 2A
- Seek to expedite the preparation and submission of the planning application, preferably no later than Spring 2016
- Confirm that the target opening date of September 2018 will be met
- Accommodate the attendance of a staff representative of Lucan Community College at all future meetings held by official at the Department of Education and the DDLETB regarding the progression of this building project so that the Board of Management can remain fully aware of all progress.
Lucan is in dire need of secondary school places and it is vital that this extension goes ahead on schedule.

Thank you to all those who applied for a place in 1st year 2016. All applicants have received a letter informing them of their category placement. The Board of Management received an unprecedented number of letters from parents who are on the waiting list in category B (first in family, and effectively attending and living in our traditional geographical area) for 2016. Parents in this category recently received a letter from the Board to invite them to a meeting. This matter is directly linked to the fact that the school has been awaiting an extension for almost 10 years. The Board calls on all local representatives to champion the prioritising of the school extension and to ensure that there is commitment and finance secured at the highest levels to the speedy delivery of the school extension and hence to the school’s ability to enrol more students.
