Model EU Debate
The Model Council of the European Union debate took place on Thursday, 27 February In Dublin Castle. The annual debate is a simulation of a meeting of the Council of the European Union. Each EU Member State is represented by a team of students from a secondary school. Our team of three 5th yr politcs and society students from Lucan Community was proud to represent Sweden and participate in the debate. Some students and staff attended the event , supporting the team. The motion for discussion, on the topic of Climate Action, was if the EU should increase its target for carbon emissions to 50/55 %
The debate was chaired by Barry Andrews, MEP. It was officially opened by Richard Bruton TD, Minister for Climate and environment and Ciarain Cuffe MEP, gave closing speech.
The debate judges were Noelle O’Connell, Executive Director of the European Movement Ireland; Mary McCaughey, Head of Information and Communication at the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions; and Michael Ewing, Development Officer at the Irish Environmental Network & Environmental Pillar. Ambassadors of all EU Member State embassies to Ireland Members of the European Parliament were invited to attend the event.

Debating win over local rivals
Congratulations to the senior debating team who defeated local rivals St. Josephs College. The motion was ‘The global population timebomb is being diffused’ -which Lucan Community College successfully passed,securing them the local debating trophy.
The team was captained by Alex Healy with Emmet Bellew, Blaithnaid Henry and Gayatri Sangra.
Well done also to Alex’s sister Olivia Healy, a past pupil of Lucan Community College, who chaired the debate
Dramatic debating draw
On Tuesday night Lucan Community College hosted Stepaside Educate Together Secondary School in the Concern Debates.
The dramatic debate resulted in a draw – usually unheard of in a debating competition.
The two teams debated on the motion ‘30 years later, the world is no closer to ending the global HIV and AIDS epidemic’.
After the two teams battled it out on topics such as lack of education surrounding HIV/AIDS, stigma, the expensive of HIV medication, the adjudicators retired to deliberate on the result.
The Chief Adjudicator for Concern in announcing the result noted that it was the first time he had ever rewarded a draw as a result in a debate, such was the quality of the argument from both teams.
Congratulations to both teams.
Lucan CC seal another win in Concern Debate series
Congratulations to the senior debating team; Oisin O’Sullivan, Matthew Graham, Gayatri Sangra and Blaithnaid Henry, who successfully defeated Holy Family Community School in the final debate of the league phase of The Concern Debates.
The debate took place on Thursday evening (18th January) in Lucan Community College where the home team proposed the motion, ‘The AIDS epidemic will end by 2030’.
Well done to Jennifer Anniboh (chairperson) and Darragh Gorman (timekeeper) who participated in their first debate of the year.
With the league phase now over, the team eagerly await the final tallies from this round to see if they can progress to the highly competitive playoff round.
Congratulations to all involved and to Ms. Mulhern and Ms. Doherty for their time and dedication to preparing students for the Concern Debate series.
Senior Debaters succeed again!
On Wednesday 13th December, the Lucan Community College senior debating team were victorious against Luttrellstown Community College in the league phase of the Concern Debates 2017/2018.
The team included Matthew Graham, Blaithnaid Henry, Rhiannon Withero and was captained by Gayatri Sangra.
The team opposed the motion, ‘Young people today are indifferent to the problems of the Developing World’.
Our team successfully proved that they are a fantastic example of young people who are taking action by tackling some of the most important issues facing the world today.
The team will now take a well deserved break from debating until they face Holy Family Community School on the 18th January 2018.
A big thank you to Ms. Mulhern and congratulations to all involved!
Senior Debating team battle on in Concern Debates
On Wednesday 29th November, the Lucan Community College Senior Debating team took part in the latest installment of this year’s Concern Debates. The senior debaters found themselves facing local rivals, St. Joseph’s College who proposed the motion; ‘China is Good For Africa’.
The Lucan Community College team opposed the motion with some fantastic speeches and rebuttals from our seasoned debaters Gayatri Sangra, Rhiannon Withero, Oisin O’Sullivan and our esteemed captain, Alex Healy.
Unfortunately, the motion was carried on the night giving the victory to a worthy team from St. Joseph’s College. The audience walked away from the debate having gained an invaluable insight into global development issues surrounding China’s involvement in the developing world.
It’s onwards and upward’s for the senior debaters as we take on Luttrellstown Community College on December 13th for our final debate before the new year.
Senior debating team make their point against local rivals
Congratulations to our Senior Debating Team in their recent victory over Colaiste Cois Life in the first of this year’s Concern Debates. The team included Gayatri Sangra, Alex Healy, Oisin O’Sullivan and was captained by Blaithnáid Henry.
Lucan Community College proposed the motion ‘For women to access leadership positions, gender quotas must be implemented’ and had a unanimous victory over the opposition. The adjudicators commended both teams on their research and knowledge of global issues and were impressed by the passionate and skillful oration skills of both teams.
The debate was chaired by senior debator, Matthew Graham and Ms. Monahan was our dutiful timekeeper. The team are currently in preparation for their next debate against Luttrellstown Community College after the midterm break on the 14th of November.
Thanks to all involved and particularly to Ms Mulhern who has put so much time into helping the debating team since September.

Congratulations to our Irish debating teams who took part in the first round of the Gael Linn Competition recently. They should be extremely proud of themselves. It was a great achievement to take part. Hard luck to our senior team who did not go through to the next round and the very best of luck to our junior team who beat the Dominican College, Sion Hill to go through to the next level.
The Speech
Three of our First year Junior Debating students entered into the Matheson Junior Debating competition The Speech. Each student had to make a video recreating a famous speech from history or film that was then uploaded onto Facebook where students would progress by public vote.
1st Year – Darragh – The Kings Speech
1st Year – Alex – The Hunger Games (400+votes)
1st Year – Gayatri – Helen Keller
Gayatri narrowly lost out on the 3rd finalist position. Alex and Darragh are two of three Junior Finalists. Students videos are currently before a panel of film and oratorical experts who will choose the overall winner.
Our Teacher Student Drama ‘Our Day Out!’
We are delighted to announce the winners of our Reading Week Poster Competition for 2023. The standard of talent and creativity was outstanding. Well done to everyone who entered a poster. The overall winners are Ellen Birnie (Junior) and Naoise Murphy (Senior). Congratulations!
Our Second Years are thoroughly enjoying their trip to Barcelona! Thanks to Ms McKelvey and the team of teachers who have travelled with over 140 second year students to give them this fantastic opportunity. @ddletb @LccAssoc
Ryan Lally from Grá Pizza ran a great workshop today on pizza making as part of a wellbeing promotion, and also talked about setting up your own business and all about buying good Irish ingredients. Staff and students were delighted with the pizzas! #wellbeing #buyIrish @ddletb
