Five students from Lucan Community College have been selected to participate in the provincial finals Mathletes 2015. They are Alex Hanley, Carmen Trefas and Eoin O’Sullivan (1st year students) , Ciaran Behan (2nd year) and Hannah Keating (4th year). The final takes place on Saturday 18th April from 9.30am to 2.30pm in Google Headquarters. There were over 12,000 participants in the competition and 680 were selected to take part in the provincial finals.
Maths teacher Ciaran Duffy reports that many of our 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th year students have been busy working away on the maths website khanacademy.org over the past four weeks. Our students were entered into a national competition called Mathletes which syncs their Khan Academy accounts to a national leaderboard. Since starting this competition our school lies 2nd on the national leaderboard out of over 100 second level schools in the country; a great achievement which we are all extremely proud of. Even more impressive is that our students only joined the competition some 7 weeks after it started.
Particular mention must go to Aidan O’Driscoll of 5th year who has given of his time on Saturday mornings to train as a mathletes coach whereby he brings these skills back to the school to run a mathletes club at lunch times on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Abraham Odokuoya, Donal Flannery and James Burns and Aidan O’Driscoll of 5th year, Joshua Odidison, Aoife Greally, Dean Gahan-Connolly and Hannah Keating of TY, Ammna Aljubury, Ciarán Behan, Eoin Griffin & Rhiannon Withero in 2nd year and Alex Hanley, Carmen Trefas, TJ Burns and Gabriele Kolesnikovaite in 1st year have all been in the top 10 of the national leaderboards at different times in the past 4 weeks. Alex in fact finished 2nd in the national finals for the month of February and received a certificate for same.
Congrats to all involved from our Maths Department and it’s never too late to get involved – students in any year can log in at any time to www.khanacdemy.org – it is bound to improve your mathematics at any time. You can check out the leader boards at www.mathletes.ie
