Literacy Quote of the Week: English Department

This week’s literacy quote comes from the English Department. They have chosen a quote from the famous Irish poet William Butler Yeats.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” W. B. Yeats

William Butler Yeats (13 June 1865 – 28 January 1939) was an Irish poet and one of the foremost figures of world 20th century literature.

Yeats helped to found the Abbey Theatre, which remains Ireland’s foremost theatre for stage productions. He was also a school inspector and in his later years served as an Irish Senator for two terms.

The English department have also included a second quote from Plutarch that supports the sentiments expressed by W. B. Yeats.

“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.”  Plutarch

Plutarch (c.AD 46 – c.AD 120) was a Greek biographer, essayist, philospopher, priest, ambassador and magistrate.

The Parents Association would love to use the occasion of this first meeting to welcome new members, whether your children are in the college already or if they are new students to us.

The Parents Association is great way to get involved in school life, get to know other parents and contribute in a voluntary capacity. As always, the College would like to thank the Parents Association for their continued work over the years and look forward to working closely with them again over the coming year.
