What a fantastic ‘artistic’ week – great fun and great learning. All first, second, third and fifth years took part in a full day of workshops throughout the week culminating in our annual Dress Up Day on Friday 28th October. This year workshops concentrated on areas such as pod-casting and music technology but also the usual favourites were back – African and Samba Drumming, Bodhrán playing, Circus Skills and Juggling to name only some.
The Dress-Up day, in appreciation of the centenary of the 1916 Rising, was to form a human tri-colour flag with different years wearing the Green, White and Orange which we attempted in the drizzle before all students and teachers took part in our annual Whole School Table Quiz. Thanks to Mr Ciarán Duffy for organising the week (again) and for all the staff who helped make this week run so smoothly for our wonderful students.
The SpinRowathon was also introduced this year as a charity fundraiser for the Irish Cancer Society and we thank all the students and their families and friends who donated to this great cause. Thanks to Jimmy Stagg from Stagg Cycles Lucan who provided the bikes and rollers for the spinathon.
Enjoy the midterm break.
Tá feachtás i mbun oibre ag ár gcoiste scoláire Dochás na nGael chun athrú a thabhairt maidir le curaclaim Bunscoile agus Meánscoile san Ghaeilge. Sínigh an achainí le bhur dtacaíocht a thaispeáint le bhur dtoil.
Some of our Transition Year students on the Dochás na nGael committee are trying to raise awareness about changes needed in the primary and second level curriculum for Irish. Have a look at their petition webpage and sign it to show your support and improve the level of engagement of students with our national language.
Dublin Fire Service in association have made this video available to remind the community of the importance of staying safe at Halloween. We ask all of our students and families to watch the video and to ensure that you make safe decisions over the midterm break. We commend the work of the Fire Service in our community – in fact some of our past pupils are members of the Dublin Fire Department – and wish them a very safe Halloween also.
Parents/guardians and students are asked to note that Lucan Community College will be open as usual on Thursday 27th October and any subsequent strike days. We have been advised that there will be no picket at the school gate.
Thanks to all parents/guardians and prospective students who attended our Open Day on Thursday 13th October. We estimate that there were about 450 families represented on the day. Visitors to the school were offered a guided tour by our current students and received a brochure outlining the various curricular and extra-curricular programmes that are on offer in the college. Each subject area had a display of work done by students and teachers and students were on hand to answer questions from visitors. Parents and students leaving the school commented on how proud our students are of the College and of being a member of our community.
Thanks for members of our Parents’ Association who attended and offered a cup of tea to visitors as well as explaining the importance of parental involvement in our school. We hope that those who visited found out more about what we have to offer and that it will help future students to select most suitable option subjects. Thanks to all of our staff and students who made the event such a memorable occasion.
Reminder: Closing date for applications for 1st year 2018 (current 5th class students) is 4.30pm on Friday 28th October 2016. Any applications received after that time will be categorised as LATE applications and will not be dealt with until all other Categories have been processed.

Thanks to all of our teachers who have volunteered to give their time and energy to ensuring we have a large and varied extra-curricular programme running in our school. Extra-curricular coordinator Ms Joy has issued this Extracurricular update and encourages all students to get involved in some activity. Students can approach the teacher in charge of the activity and should listen out for announcements about upcoming events. We have found that students who participate in some out of class activities find it easier to settle into school and make new friends. Remember that your voluntary contribution of €150 per annum to the college funds our extra-curricular programme and without this support from parents/guardians, we could not offer such a variety of activities.
