Lucan Community College students are once again using their Khan Academy accounts to improve their mathematical knowledge. Following on from the success of last year’s Mathletes competition (renamed LearnStorm this year) students can start earning points now for our school and earn real-life rewards, exclusive badges, and a chance to attend the epic final celebration.
Last year a number of our students qualified for the national finals in Google headquarters in Dublin. So please encourage your son/daughter to take some time out of their day to use the Khan Academy website (www.khanacademy.org). Above all, the site encourages students to learn mathematics at their own pace. It encourages independent learning which ties in with our theme this year of ‘Towards Independence’. Students can access resources in many disciplines including science, finance, economics, art, music, history and computer coding/programming. If they are unclear on a topic they can watch videos and learn how to do a particular type of question in the comfort of their own I home and at their own pace.
Many of our 1st/2nd years will be assigned homework using the website over the next while so please help them in this regard where possible.
Youth Activist Award nominations are being sought to be in with a chance of travelling to Vermont, USA. Further information can be found here. The successful student needs to be available to travel unaccompanied to Vemont on 30th June to 9th July 2016. We have a very active Amnesty group in the school amongst our Senior students and we would be delighted to recommend a student to be considered for this opportunity.
Nominations (including self-nominations) should be submitted to Ms McCarthy on or before 4pm, Thursday 28th January 2016.

Presenting the money was Mr David Byrne Year Head of 1st Year and the team of 6th year Prefects, who helped organise the day.
