Students and staff at Lucan CC have fund-raised for many charities over the recent weeks. Ms Ryan and some Transition Year students organised the St Vincent de Paul secret money-bag collection last week and in total €1425 was raised. Cathleen Henry and Kieran McBride from the local branch of St Vincent de Paul are pictured above receiving our donations to help those struggling this Christmas season.

Over €1000 was raised from our non-uniform day which will help the following charities: Focus Ireland, World Youth Day organisation and the Rainbow Child Foundation. Ms Ryan and the prefects team organised the St Vincent de Paul secret money-bag collection last week and in total €1425 was raised. Ms Gallagher and some of the TY fund raising team raised over €800 for Dyslexia Ireland this week in the pouring rain around Lucan. Over €300 was raised from the annual staff coffee morning in aid of St Brigid’s Hospice, The Curragh in memory of past PE and Maths teacher Carol Meehan.

We thank the students, their families and the staff for their generous contributions to extremely worthy causes this Christmas. Enjoy the celebrations and the holidays.

Amnesty International – World Human Rights Day 10th December 2015 photos

Lucan CC World Human Rights Day

Lucan Community College students will be celebrating World Human Rights Day on December the 10th (the anniversary of the UN creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948)  This international document, signed by over 190 nations, states the 30 basic rights and fundamental freedoms to which all human beings are entitled.

The Lucan CC Amnesty group, working with different subjects, are organising a number of events to raise awareness about human rights issues.

These include:

– In Religious Education classes, senior students will participate in the Global Amnesty “Write for Rights” campaign where students will letters/postcards in support of the campaigns for justice for Phyoe Phoe Aung, 17 years, locked up for a student protest in Myanmar, girls as young as 11 forced to marry in Burkina Faso and Rania Alabbasi and her family who were sezied by government agents and still missing in Syria.

– What a sweet way to celebrate with ” The Great LCC Human Rights Bake Off” competition and Cake Sale. This will take place on the day and will be open to students, teachers and parents. Funds go to Amnesty.

– In English lessons, 1st and 2nd year students will take part in poetry competitions on the theme of human rights.

–  2nd and 3rd Year C.S.P.E students will be decorating our school with bunting on the day, illustrating the 30 different articles from the Declaration of Human Rights.

 – Students will be laying Welcome Mats in the courtyard area of the school, calling on governments across the world to welcome refugees and do more to respect Article 14 of the Declaration of Human Rights which states people have the right to seek refuge in other countries.

Local media have been invited to a short prize giving ceremony at 10am in the school hall, for the winners of the poetry and bake off competitions. This will be followed by laying of the welcome mats. To raise awareness students will also be wearing T-Shirts printed with different articles from the Declaration and there will be an opportunity to photograph bunting, winning poems/cakes and talk to students.

The picture below shows some students from a nearby school who visited the Amnesty group to talk about their personal experience as refugees. We very much appreciate the time taken by themselves and their teacher to facilitate the visit.

Silver Gaisce awards 2016

Silver Gaisce awards 2016Three Lucan Community College students received their Gaisce Silver Award this year from Ian Madigan Irish Rugby star at the Helix on Monday November 30th.  Approximately 265 students from all over Ireland completed the Gaisce Silver Award this year, the highest amount ever.  Congratulations to students David Gartlan, Aoife Minihane and Danielle Murray.  These students began their challenge back in Transition year when they did their Gaisce Bronze award.  Congratulations to the students and maybe they will take the Gold Gaisce award when they get to college?

Lucan CC wins Leargas Competition

Congratulations to Ms Clarke’s Transition Year German class who won the Leargas European Day of Languages 2015 “Day in the Life..” competition having been chosen from close to 700 entries. Leargas said “the standard was exceptionally high, but the winning entry stood out because of the care and attention paid to all aspects of the diary. Students imagined days in the life of holocaust survivor Tomi Reichental, and presented them in a hand-made book. The winning individual entry (written by Thomas O’Neill) told of a harrowing day at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.” History teacher Ms McCarthy arranged the Tomi Reichental visit and is also delighted with the success of the students. Students and teachers will travel to Bruges shortly courtesy of Leargas.

Lucan Community College’s Parents Association will host their first meeting of the new school year on the 5th September at 7.30pm. The Parents Association would love to use the occasion of this first meeting to welcome new members, whether your children are in the college already or if they are new students to us.

The Parents Association is great way to get involved in school life, get to know other parents and contribute in a voluntary capacity. As always, the College would like to thank the Parents Association for their continued work over the years and look forward to working closely with them again over the coming year.
